French party when Payet hit by a bottle

Payet was hit by the bottle in the first minutes of the match in Lyon

Sunday’s Ligue 1 match between Lyon and Marseille was abandoned after Dimitri Payet was hit by a bottle thrown from the stands within five minutes of play.

The teams were sent to the dressing room by referee Ruddy Buquet and after a long wait, the Marseille players never returned.

Almost two hours after the game was stopped, it was officially canceled.

It is the second time this season that Payet has been hit with a bottle amid a series of incidents in French soccer.

Marseille’s game in Nice in August was abandoned when the former West Ham midfielder threw a bottle into the crowd, prompting fans to storm the field.

Nice had two points deducted, one of which was suspended, and Payet received a one-game suspension.

Marseille midfielder Valentin Roniger suffered a cut lip when he was hit with a bottle in the season opener in Montpellier.

And the second half of the northern derby between RC Lens and Lille in September was delayed by about half an hour after rival fans threw objects at each other. Then people ran into the field, prompting riot police and commissioners to intervene.

The latest incident in Lyon occurred when Payet was about to take a corner and left the Groupama Stadium field with an ice pack on his head.

Shortly after the incident, an announcement from the stadium said that a person had been arrested and that play would resume, but warned that more problems would lead to a abandonment.

It looked like the match would start over when the Lyon players came out to warm up, but the Marseille players never came out and around 21:40 GMT the match was postponed.

Lyon CEO Jean-Michel Aulas said the club sends Payet “our apologies” and added that “the perpetrator was immediately reported and caught. It is an isolated act.”

“Our players followed Mr. Buquet’s orders and came back to warm up,” he said. “Then the referee changed his mind and they went back to the locker room. They wisely waited for the decision and agreed.”
