‘We don’t want to go to Zumba, we are punks’

An all-female garage punk band whose members average an age of 55 is trying to encourage more middle-aged women to play instruments.

The Verinos, who formed when Leicester’s extended lockdown measures were relaxed, perform songs that address age and gender stereotypes.

The five-piece act has auditioned to perform at next year’s Glastonbudget music festival in response to male-dominated lineups at other UK festivals.

“There’s often the idea that you’re just going to dig your garden and go to Zumba or visit a National Trust property,” said songwriter and guitarist Ruth Miller.

“We want to be in a punk band. We don’t just want to watch TV during the day.”
