Los Angeles Judge Terminates Guardianship of Britney Spears

A Los Angeles judge on Friday ended the guardianship that has controlled the life of pop star Britney Spears for 13 years.

“As of today, the guardianship of the person and property of Britney Jean Spears is hereby terminated,” Judge Brenda Penny said after a hearing.

He added that the current conservator would continue to work to resolve the ongoing financial problems in the case.

The 39-year-old “Piece of Me” singer had pleaded with the court to end the legal settlement that has governed her personal life and her $ 60 million estate since 2008.

He did not attend Friday’s hearing in Los Angeles.

Fans outside erupted in cheers for the decision and began to sing his hit “Stronger.”

The guardianship was established and supervised by the singer’s father after she had a public meltdown and underwent treatment for undisclosed mental health issues.

Since revealing years of private anguish in tearful testimony in June, Spears has received a surge of public support and has hired a new attorney who acted aggressively to end the restrictions. In June, she told the court that she had been traumatized and wanted to “get her life back” as soon as possible.

None of those involved in the guardianship on Friday had objected to the request to end it.

A key question on Friday had been whether Judge Penny could require Spears to undergo a mental health evaluation, a step often taken before ending a guardianship. She did not do it.

Interest in the case was fueled last year by documentaries and the #FreeBritney movement of fans who questioned why the singer was living under restrictions while touring the world and earning millions of dollars.
