England’s loose-headed mainstay Ellis Genge tested positive for Covid-19, meaning that uncapped Sale’s mainstay Bevan Rodd will start against Australia on Saturday.

Newcastle’s Trevor Davison, who won his only international game for England in July, replaces Rodd on the bench.

Joe Marler, who replaced Genge against Tonga last weekend, is out a positive test on Monday.

Owen Farrell did not play last weekend after a test indicated he had Covid-19, but was found to be a false positive.

The RFU said that Genge is isolating himself and that players or staff have had no other positive results after lateral flow tests, with PCR results expected later on Friday or early Saturday morning.

Government regulations require those who test positive to isolate themselves for 10 days, meaning Genge will also miss England’s final fall test against world champions South Africa.

The coronavirus problems in England began when a member of its support staff tested positive on November 4.

The team trained at Twickenham as scheduled on Friday morning and head coach Eddie Jones said of the interruption: “Now we treat it as normal.

“Every day is an adventure and we are on a roller coaster right now. Covid keeps coming, we just accept it and move on.

“I’ve been watching the players go by this morning. Some are disappointed in Ellis, some are angry, some just want to move on.”

Davison’s call comes as seasoned English international Mako Vunipola remains out of the squad.

England: Butler; Tuilagi, Slade, Farrell (capt) May; Smith, Youngs; Rodd, George, Sinckler, Itoje, Hill, Lawes, Underhill, Curry.

Replacements: Blamire, Davison, Stuart, Ewels, Dombrandt, Simmonds, Quirke, Malins.
