The reaction to the series has left him “with no choice” but to do another, Hwang said at a red carpet event for “Squid Game” at NeueHouse in Los Angeles on Monday.
“There has been so much demand, love and attention for a season two, so I feel like I have no choice but to do a season two,” he said.
“I have a rough idea on that, but I think it’s too early to say when or how specifically. But I can promise you this: Gi-hun will come back and do something for the world.”
A CNN spokesperson told CNN that the company was in talks about a second season, but that it had not yet been confirmed.
“Squid Game” is a South Korean fictional drama in which contestants in desperate need of money play deadly childhood games to win cash prizes.
On October 12, Netflix exclusively told CNN that it was its “biggest series to launch.”
In early October, Hwang told CNN his thoughts on a second series.
“Writing, producing and directing a series alone was really a big task. When I think about doing the same for the second season, personally I am a little concerned,” he said. “Nothing is confirmed at the moment, but a lot of people are excited that I’m really looking at it.”
