Drone battles are the future of conflict, says IDF artillery chief

Future conflicts with Gaza or Lebanon may involve firefights between drones, chief artillery officer, brigadier general. Neri Horowitz testified during the UVID 2021 conference on Wednesday morning, according to Maariv.

“The enemy is developing in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon,” Horowitz said. “We must know how to distinguish between a friend and an enemy and deal with enemy capabilities.”

The artillery chief added that the unmanned vehicles will join the fight alongside manned forces in a variety of operations, including exposure, attack, evacuation, security and maneuvers, with unmanned tools that will help expose the enemy and enable Soldiers see and hear them in all settings.

“In the tactical space, the IDF wants a lot of up-to-date and advanced tools, autonomous systems that are simple to operate and can be multiplied on a large scale,” Horowitz said, according to Maariv.

The artillery chief added that while in the past the war had three dimensions: land, sea and air, today three additional dimensions have been added: cyber, underground and electromagnetic.

“Multidimensional thinking says that the military unit will no longer deal only with its own world, but within the framework of a common world in several dimensions,” said Horwitz. “The goal is for an infantry battalion commander fighting in a Lebanese village to be able to talk to everyone and receive the full capabilities of the IDF.”

Horowitz stated that he views the drones as “an element in the security and strategy of the State of Israel.” He added that in addition to the two UAV units that are already in the Artillery Corps, a third unit will be established. “There is no more exclusivity, everything is multi-armed and multidimensional. Sky Rider (a drone unit) is operated by the Artillery Corps. The vertical dimension is part of the war.”

On Monday, an Iron Dome battery fired a missile at a Hamas drone crossing the sea from the Gaza Strip, according to the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit.
