Israeli bookstores stop selling Sally Rooney’s books due to boycott

Israel’s two major bookstore chains, Steimatzky and Tzomet Sefarim, will stop selling Sally Rooney’s books, they announced Thursday.

Rooney’s books have been removed from the two companies’ websites and they have begun the process of removing the books from their stores, of which there are more than 200 across the country.

This move comes after Modan Publishing House said last month that Rooney would not allow his new book, Beautiful world, where are you?, which will be published in Israel because it supports BDS. Modan had previously published other Rooney books, Normal people and Conversations with friends, in Hebrew. Later, Rooney declared that he agreed with his problem with Israel and not with the translation of his books.

“I would be honored to have my latest novel translated into Hebrew and available to readers in Hebrew,” he said in a statement. “But for the moment, I have chosen not to sell these translation rights to an Israel-based publisher.”

This is not the first time that Rooney has experienced anti-Israel views, as the actions and opinions of his characters in his previous books are also anti-Israel.

“The Steimatzky network is a literary setting and a warm and welcoming home for any literary work with a love for the written word,” a Steimatzky representative said in a statement. “From the moment the subject was brought to our attention, as an immediate step, we removed the books from the site.”

“The protest we started this week is paying off quickly,” activist Yoseph Haddad wrote in a Facebook post on Tzomet Sefarim’s page on Thursday. “Steimatzky has already removed Sally Rooney’s books from their website and announced that they will also be removed from their stores. I am glad they made the right and required decision. Those who boycott us and incite against Israel are not worthy to sell books. here and earn money with us. “
