Social Democratic leader to become Sweden’s first female prime minister

Sweden’s Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson came one step closer to becoming her first woman as prime minister on Thursday when the ruling Social Democratic party elected her as its leader.

He will need the approval of a fragmented parliament to take over as prime minister from Stefan Lofven, who wants to step aside before the national elections scheduled for September 2022.

Lofven’s minority coalition has barely survived since he came to power in 2014 and Andersson’s path to Sagerska House, the prime minister’s official residence, is uncertain.

She must obtain the endorsement of the two current coalition partners, the Green Party, as well as the Left and Center parties, from outside the alliance.

Neighboring Norway got its first female lead 40 years ago. Sweden’s failure to do the same has upset many in a country that prides itself as a world leader in gender equality and has a self-described “feminist” foreign policy.

If appointed, Andersson will face tough budget negotiations later this year and will need to reverse a deficit in the polls if she wants to extend her post as prime minister beyond next September.

The 54-year-old will become prime minister if a majority in parliament does not reject her in a confirmation vote, probably later this month.

The support of the center and left parties is not a fact. The Center Party wants changes to the rules on forest rights and building regulations in exchange for your support. The Greens oppose those policies.

The left wants to have a voice in politics, while the Center Party wants them excluded.

A vote against Andersson could lead to snap elections or Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson becoming prime minister.

His center-right bloc is backed by the Sweden Democrats, a populist, anti-immigrant party that the Greens, the Left and the Center want to prevent from influencing government policy.
