Raducanu loses to Kostyuk in the quarterfinals

Emma Raducanu was aiming for the third WTA circuit level victory of her career against Kostyuk.

Emma Raducanu’s hopes of facing her idol Simona Halep at the Transylvania Open were dashed by Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals.

The 18-year-old US Open champion was defeated 6-2 6-1 by her Ukrainian teenage opponent.

Before the match, Raducanu described how Kostyuk would “destroy” her when they played at the junior level.

Kostyuk will meet Halep in the quarterfinals after the Romanian thrashed her compatriot Jaqueline Cristian 6-1 6-1.

“I honestly don’t know how I won the first game,” said sixth seed Kostyuk, who only needed 57 minutes to reserve his place in the semifinals.

“I was 15-40 down, she had an advantage, I was serving, and I think that’s where it all started – somehow I won that game and I gained this confidence.”

End of the road to Raducanu

The tournament in Romania had a special meaning for Raducanu, 18, as his grandmother still lives in the country and his father, Ian, was born there.

Raducanu, ranked 23rd in the world, recorded her first win on the circuit against Polona Hercog on Tuesday, followed by a straight sets win over Ana Bogdan two days later.

Against Kostyuk, however, Raducanu was unable to replicate the impressive form he has displayed during his meteoric rise.

The third seeded made 41 unforced errors compared to 16 by her opponent, who is only five months older than her.

Raducanu suffered an early break in the first set, but began to find his range and better deal with Kostyuk’s powerful serve.

But any idea of a comeback for the Grand Slam winner faded in the second set when Kostyuk, ranked 55th, dominated to secure a semi-final with top seed Halep.

In all, Raducanu was broken five times and recorded seven double faults, a far cry from the flawless display the Brit produced at Flushing Meadows in September.

Local favorite Halep has already faced 19-year-old Kostyuk this month, and the pair met in the second round in Indian Wells three weeks ago.

Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion, was drawn to a tie-break in the first set against Kostyuk before beating the Ukrainian 7-6 (7-2) 6-1.
