‘The guilt of surviving the mine disaster will not end’

A decade ago, four miners were killed when water rushed into a drifting mine in South Wales.

Charles Breslin, 62, David Powell, 50, Phillip Hill, 44, and Garry Jenkins, 39, were killed in the Gleision coal mine, near Cilybebyll, Neath Port Talbot, on September 15, 2011.

Fellow miners Jake Wyatt, 68, and Nigel Evans, 49, were two of the only three to escape, and the weight of what happened and the “guilt of the survivors” still weighs heavily on them.

“I think I will always have that guilt until the day I die,” Jake said.
